Penang

A little bit of luxury

We're currently spending a few days in Penang before continuing down to Singapore. We've had two days on the beach at Batu Ferringhi Holiday Inn resort and now we're back to earth in a hostel in Georgetown. The great thing about our hostel is that it's right in the middle of Little India so the food is fantastic and incredibly cheap as well - we ate lunch for just under 1gbp a head. We are both really enjoying Penang. Holiday Inn was great for a couple of days relaxing. I have to confess we spent much of our stay sat in our air-con room watching (rip-off) DVDs with very amusing English subtitles that bore little relation to what was being said or indeed any part of the storyline at all.

We cycled back to Georgetown this morning along a very pretty undulating coastal road (the traffic in town is pretty hectic though), and have had a little wander round. It looks like a fascinating place and we are looking forward to exploring it as soon as it gets a little bit cooler this evening....

Cycle log to date:

23rd Jan - Sungai Petani - 61km, 21.4kph av.

24th Jan - Penang - 61km, 22kph av.

Rest days pretty much since then except for a little 17km ride back to Georgetown today.

Whilst googling for info on cycling in Malaysia I came across a website of another cycle tourer who seems to have travelled all over the world with his bicycle. Anyway, it turns out he has opened his house up for cycle tourists to stay at on their way through Malaysia and it's rather conveniently placed for us so we emailed him a couple of nights ago to see if we could stay. He's responded to say that we're welcome to, and in fact one of his relatives is getting married the night that we arrive and we are also welcome to go along to that. So on Sunday we're heading off from Penang towards KL and spending the evening at a complete strangers wedding. Should be fun!

Down in to Malaya

Doing well so far

We were minor celebs at the last brothel we stayed at. And we were in the poshest house in town. None of the receptionists, bellboys, security men etc. could believe that we, farang, wanted to stay at the KPK Hotel. And as a result fell over themselves in an effort to be helpful.

Day 7 on the road

from Chuphon on

It all started so well, pretty much. We'd got the hotel room for a good price, and, despite the fact that in this establishment we could pay by the hour, it was much more reasonable to pay for a whole night up front - ha! called their bluff there.

Cycling Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore

I love to ride my bicycle (most days...)

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing and Richard, being by far a more experienced cyclist than me was quite wary to start with.
